Why Choose Earl Grey?

Distinctive bergamot aroma
The unmistakable character of Earl Grey comes from bergamot, a fragrant citrus fruit traditionally associated with the classic blend. Its bright, floral-citrus aroma gives the tea its signature character.

Rich black tea foundation
The full-bodied character of black tea provides the perfect balance to the fresh citrus notes of bergamot.

Refreshing and aromatic
Earl Grey offers a satisfying combination of bold tea flavour and uplifting citrus fragrance, making it an excellent everyday tea.

Perfect with or without milk
Enjoy it traditionally with a splash of milk, or drink it black to appreciate the full fragrance and citrus character.

Ideal for afternoon tea
Few teas are more closely associated with the elegance of traditional afternoon tea. Pair it with cakes, biscuits, scones or light pastries.

The Story of Earl Grey

Earl Grey has become one of the world’s most famous flavoured teas, named after Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey and British Prime Minister in the early 19th century.

The exact origins of the blend are surrounded by several stories and legends. One popular tale suggests that the tea was presented to Earl Grey after a diplomatic encounter involving a rescued son, although the historical details remain uncertain.

What is certain is that the name Earl Grey became associated with tea flavoured with the distinctive oil of bergamot, creating the iconic citrus-scented blend enjoyed around the world today.

How to Brew Earl Grey Tea

For the best flavour, use approximately 2–3g of loose leaf tea per cup.

  1. Bring freshly drawn water to approximately 95–100°C.
  2. Add 2–3g of Earl Grey to your cup, teapot or tea infuser.
  3. Pour over the hot water.
  4. Allow to infuse for approximately 3–5 minutes.
  5. Remove or strain the leaves and enjoy.

For a lighter cup, reduce the brewing time. For a stronger cup, use slightly more tea or extend the infusion.

How to Serve Earl Grey

Earl Grey is wonderfully versatile.

Traditional: Add a splash of milk for a smooth, comforting cup.

Black: Enjoy without milk to fully appreciate the fragrant bergamot and tea character.

With lemon: A slice of fresh lemon beautifully complements the citrus notes of bergamot.

Sweetened: Add a little sugar or honey if preferred.

Iced: Brew slightly stronger, allow to cool and serve over ice for a refreshing citrus tea.

Perfect for Afternoon Tea

Earl Grey is a natural companion to traditional afternoon tea.

Enjoy alongside:

  • Scones
  • Shortbread
  • Cakes
  • Biscuits
  • Pastries

  • Light sandwiches

Its fragrant citrus character helps cut through rich and sweet foods, making it an especially versatile tea for entertaining.
