The Story of Moroccan Mint Tea
Moroccan Mint Tea, or Atay, is an important part of Moroccan culture and hospitality.
In Morocco, preparing tea is often a social ritual. A host may prepare the tea carefully in front of guests before pouring it into small glasses.
Traditionally, green tea, fresh mint and sugar are combined in a teapot, with the tea poured from a height to create a little froth and help mix the flavours.
Tea may be offered several times during a visit, with each serving representing hospitality, friendship and generosity.
While recipes vary between families and regions, the combination of green tea and mint remains one of the most recognisable flavours associated with Morocco.
How to Brew Moroccan Mint Tea
For a single cup, use approximately 2–3g of Moroccan Mint Tea.
- Bring freshly drawn water to approximately 80–90°C.
- Add 2–3g of tea to your cup or teapot.
- Pour over the hot water.
- Allow to infuse for approximately 3–5 minutes.
- Strain and enjoy.
For a more traditional Moroccan-style preparation, brew in a teapot and serve in small glasses. Sweeten with sugar or honey according to taste.
Traditional Moroccan Serving
For the traditional experience, add your Moroccan Mint Tea to a teapot with sugar to taste.
Fresh mint can also be added if desired to intensify the mint aroma and create a more traditional Moroccan-style infusion.
Pour into small glasses and serve hot.
For a refreshing summer drink, allow the tea to cool before serving over ice.
Green Tea & Peppermint
The combination of green tea and peppermint creates a beautifully balanced flavour:
Green Tea – clean, fresh and gently grassy.
Peppermint – cool, crisp and intensely refreshing.
Together they create a fragrant tea that is refreshing without being overly heavy, making it an excellent choice for everyday drinking.
