Discover the refined character of Pai Mu Tan Tea, also known as White Peony Tea (Bai Mudan), one of China’s most treasured traditional white teas.

Made from carefully selected young tea leaves and buds, Pai Mu Tan is known for its delicate floral aroma, soft sweetness and naturally fresh character. Less processed than many traditional teas, white tea allows the natural character of the leaf to shine through.

Light, elegant and beautifully refreshing, Pai Mu Tan is an excellent choice for those who appreciate premium loose leaf tea and want to experience something different from everyday black or green tea.

Why Choose Pai Mu Tan Tea?

Delicate and naturally refreshing
Pai Mu Tan produces a light, smooth infusion with subtle floral and fresh notes, making it an exceptionally easy tea to enjoy.

A naturally elegant flavour
Expect gentle sweetness, soft floral notes and a clean, refreshing finish rather than the stronger, more robust flavour associated with black tea.

Traditionally produced white tea
White tea is one of the least processed traditional tea styles. The leaves are generally withered and dried, helping to preserve much of their natural character.

Naturally contains antioxidants
Tea naturally contains polyphenols and other plant compounds with antioxidant properties, making white tea a popular choice for those looking for a naturally refreshing drink.

A refined alternative to everyday tea
For tea drinkers wanting something lighter and more delicate, Pai Mu Tan offers a wonderfully sophisticated alternative to traditional black tea.

The Story of Pai Mu Tan

Pai Mu Tan, often written as Bai Mudan or translated as White Peony, comes from China’s long and celebrated tea tradition.

The name refers to the beautiful appearance of the tea leaves and buds, which can resemble the petals of a white peony when brewed.

White tea has traditionally been associated with the Chinese province of Fujian, where the production of white tea has developed over generations. Pai Mu Tan is particularly appreciated for using both young leaves and unopened buds, giving the finished tea its distinctive appearance and complex yet delicate character.

Today, White Peony remains a favourite among tea enthusiasts around the world who appreciate naturally produced, elegant loose leaf teas.

How to Brew Pai Mu Tan Tea

For the best flavour, use approximately 2–3g of tea per cup.

  1. Heat freshly drawn water to approximately 80–85°C.
  2. Add 2–3g of Pai Mu Tan Tea to your cup, infuser or teapot.
  3. Pour the hot water over the leaves.
  4. Allow to infuse for approximately 3–5 minutes.
  5. Remove the leaves or strain before drinking.

Tip: Avoid using boiling water, as very high temperatures can overwhelm the delicate flavour of white tea.

Pai Mu Tan can often be re-infused several times, with each infusion revealing slightly different characteristics from the leaves.

Serving Suggestions

Pai Mu Tan is traditionally enjoyed without milk, allowing its delicate floral and naturally sweet character to come through.

For a refreshing alternative, allow the tea to cool and serve over ice.

It also makes an excellent tea to enjoy alongside light foods, pastries or fresh fruit.

A Tea for Quiet Moments

Pai Mu Tan is particularly suited to those moments when you want to slow down and appreciate your tea.

Its light colour, delicate aroma and gentle flavour make it an excellent choice for a peaceful morning, afternoon tea or relaxing break.

Use a Tea Tongs / Infuser to brew a single cup, or prepare it in a small teapot and enjoy multiple infusions from the same leaves.
